We do not offer a PhD program, but we're part of a larger ecosystem of centers and labs pursuing design-related academic research at Northwestern. PhD students interested in design-related research can explore the Design Research Cluster, an interdisciplinary doctoral program sponsored by the McCormick School of Engineering and The Graduate School at Northwestern. Northwestern students in good standing may choose to take a design course at Segal without being enrolled in a Segal program. ArtCenter is a private nonprofit fully accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). Renowned for both its ties to industry and social impact initiatives, the College is the first design school to receive the United Nations’ Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status. Personally, the idea of starting an interior design business felt daunting, but about halfway through the course, I began to grasp how to make the first steps to launch my own interior design career.
A degree from The Design School
With a STEM degree, you’ll build a portfolio that displays your ability to work collaboratively on cross-disciplinary teams, and address problems with real-world solutions. Retaining its position of sixth place from last year, Aalto University is widely considered a Nordic leader when it comes to art and design education. The Design Academy Eindhoven graduation show is one of the world’s most influential exhibitions of work by new designers. Staged annually in Eindhoven during Dutch Design Week, it allows both bachelor’s and master’s students to present their final projects to thousands of visitors. Mary Ann Lazarus, FAIA, LEED Fellow, is an architect and educator working on accelerating shifts in design of the built environment to sustainable and resilient outcomes. Mary Ann has over 40 years of experience as an architect primarily at HOK, where she served as global director of sustainability for over a decade. Mary Ann served as the Resident Fellow on Sustainability at the American Institute of Architects and was 2017 Chair of the AIA’s Committee on the Environment Advisory Group.
Travis Hellstrom is an entrepreneur, international consultant, author, and executive advisor who helps mindful leaders expand their influence. He is the founder of Advance Humanity, one of the first dozen Certified B Corporations in Vermont, alongside Ben & Jerry’s, Seventh Generation, and King Arthur Flour. He is also Chair in the School of Leadership & Management at Marlboro Graduate School, with a focus on Mission Driven Organizations and Social Innovation.
